About Us

Merton Hodge and Associates was founded in 1925 by Merton Hodge, Professional Engineer and Land Surveyor. The practice began its journey in New Britain but then moved to Unionville in 1928. Mr. Hodge worked proudly and diligently until his death in 1967.

In 1969, 3 employees of Hodge, William F. Grunewald and Edward F. Reuber, (both land surveyors with the company since 1946), & Weston Barnes (since1929) received the land surveying assets and good will from the estate of Merton Hodge and transferred them to their corporation, Hodge Surveying Associates, P.C.

Barnes and Rueber both retired in the 80’s but Mr. Grunewald chose to delay his retirement.

The firm has been associated with land surveying on many different types of projects in the Farmington Valley area. Examples of these projects are boundary survey work ranging from individual building lots to a job of 3000 acres, known as The McLean Sanctuary in Simsbury, Canton and Granby; and the entire campus and land of The Avon Old Farms School.

Commercially, Hodge has also been involved in radio and television communication towers and satellite dish placement for WCCC, WTIC, Channel 18 and Fox 61 and many cellular phone towers.

In April of 2010, at the admirable age of 84, Mr. Grunewald finally decided to retire and sell the firm to its current owner, Adam Hoffman of Godfrey-Hoffman Assoc. LLC

Mr. Hoffman began his surveying career back in 1978 when he worked for his uncle, Bernard Godfrey. After graduating from Paul Smith’s College, he worked his way from rod-man to transit-man and eventually party-chief.

In 1988 when Mr. Hoffman received his Land Surveying license, he and Mr. Godfrey formed Godfrey-Hoffman Associates, now at 26 Broadway, North Haven, CT. After 12 years of a great partnership Mr. Godfrey retired.

Mr. Hoffman is thrilled to have the opportunity to carry on the Hodge name, and will do so proudly. He can appreciate firsthand the devotion it takes to run a successful surveying company, as well as the importance of honoring his predecessors.
